The tithing of profits from mills was a matter of legal dispute for some time. The dispute arose from whether such tithes should be classified as predial or personal. If personal, the recipient was entitled to deduct expenses before paying tithe on the balance. If predial, profits should be tithed in full.

Tithes of piglets, being derived from animal husbandry, were small tithes and so were normally payable to the vicar or his farmer (see ‘Tithes – modus’ under ‘Subjects’).

Types of Cause: Tithes – peas

Tithes of peas were great or predial tithes as they arose from crop husbandry and so were payable to the rector or his farmer (see ‘Tithes – modus’ under ‘Subjects’).

Peas were usually measured by the cartload for valuation. They were often dried for food during the winter months.
