It is probable that Henry and Jane Chetham were the parents of Humphrey Chetham, a very wealthy philanthropist. Humphrey was baptised in the collegiate church in July 1580. The Chetham family were wealthy cloth merchants and lived at Crumpsall Hall in north Manchester.

Career: Richard Hall was ordained priest on 10 March 1542 and appointed a Fellow of Manchester College by 1559 and remained there until his death, he was buried in the collegiate church on 4 January 1585. He was acting as treasurer of the college at the time of a metropolitan visitation in 1571 when conflict among the Fellows was said to have been occasioned by his failure to pay their stipends.

Further notes:

While at Manchester College he worked as a schoolmaster and also practiced medicine although it was reported that those he treated usually died. He was also said to be of unsound religion and a drunkard.

JOHN PEWSON otherwise MORGELL

Scribe and deputy registrar of the court.

JOHN PEWSON alias MORGELL

Qualifications: Notary Public

By 1580 John Pewson alias Morgell, of the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, was acting as deputy Registrar to Randle Cotgreave in the diocese of Chester. He was often deputed when depositions were to be taken away from Chester.

In 1606 a patent was granted by the bishop of Chester to John Morgyll as Registrar for his life and the life of his two sons. John Morgell or Morgan of Moston, near Chester, bought the Manor of Moston in about 1600 and died in 1636. In view of the dates, it seems likely that this John Morgell was the son of John Pewson alias Morgell who seems to have established a dynasty of Registrars of the diocese.
